I built this bench during my final year at RISD.

Sadly it’s been sitting in the garage and needs some love and touching up. One of these days I’ll get to it!

I generally enjoy woodworking and would love to do more of it at some point.

The bench was made using layered plywood where each sheet was stained a different color before getting stacked on top of one another. I then took a hand grinder to soften and grind the top revealing layers and layers of organic shapes.

You can see the side storage in this photo. The entire top also comes off to reveal more storage inside but it still weighs a ton!

These graceful beauties that stand 2 to 5 feet tall are highly social birds associated with good luck and fertility in many cultures. They have a fascinating courtship display and are revered in folklore and mythology for their symbolic significance in representing life, fertility, and protection.

The perfect lazy weekend filled with self care, reflection, art and catching up with ongoing, never ending projects.

Here is a needle felted blue jay I just completed.

I’ve seen so many of these little ones in my life yet they never cease to bring me joy. They might be small but their existence sprinkles so much sugar into our lives.

Despite their sweetness, these fellas tend to not play nice in the bird world. A member of the crow family, blue jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds, but they are also aggressive in competition for the nests of other small birds. They take eggs and sometimes even small birds, depending on their sizes.

Renowned for being talkative and boisterous, they have so much to say and do it loudly and in many different pitches. You will likely hear them emitting different sounds, including calls and whistles. One of the most exciting features inherent in this type of bird is that they can imitate the sounds produced by other birds of other species, including the hawk.

This mimicry can occur to scare off predators or confuse other birds. Blue Jays also like to give some vocal instructions within their social bird groups.

This might come as a surprise, but as with most other blue-hued birds, blue jays aren’t actually blue but brown! The blue jay’s coloration is not derived from pigments but is the result of light interference due to the internal structure of the feathers. If a blue feather is crushed, the blue disappears because the structure is destroyed. The actual pigment in its feathers is melanin. This is referred to as structural coloration.

Did you know, these little guys nicknamed “hummers” love sugar, are attracted to the color red and can visit over 1000 flowers each day?

Despite their name, they don’t actually “hum” but make more of a “chatter” sound and I love that a group of hummingbirds is called a “charm”.

August 14th Pakistan’s Independence Day.

I made these little camels a few years ago after the decorated camels of Clifton Beach that I remember riding as a little girl growing up in Karachi, Pakistan. At one point, I thought my grandparents and dad had migrated from India to Pakistan during the Partition of 1947 on camels. Although there were some families in the Rajasthan region of India (where my Paternal side of the family is originally from) traveling to the new Pakistan on camels, all of my family that made it to Pakistan actually arrived by train since camels just weren’t safe enough.

“The Partition”:

At midnight on August 14, 1947, the Indian Independence Act came into being, effectively ending 200 years of British colonialism and splitting the country into India and Pakistan.

“As from the fifteenth day of August, nineteen hundred and forty-seven, two independent Dominions shall be set up in India, to be known respectively as India and Pakistan,” the Act states.

But why does Pakistan celebrate its Independence Day on August 14, a day earlier than India?

According to historians, it was all down to the schedule of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last viceroy of British India. As India decided to hold celebrations at midnight on August 14, it would have been impossible for Lord Mountbatten to attend two events to hand over power on the same day.

Fun fact, my Nana-Mian or maternal grandfather, Irshad Hussain Kazmi was Mountbatten’s personal Stenographer for several years.

Meet Zuzu, the flying giraffe.

Native to Africa, these evolutionary marvels, which get their name from the Arabic word Zarafa (“one who walks swiftly”), are statuesque wonders of elegant beauty.

Did you know, giraffes have only seven neck vertebrae (just like humans!), each of which is about 10 inches long and connected with ball-and-socket joints for flexibility.

These social butterflies love to hang out in groups and even change up who they hang out with throughout the day.

Giraffes have distinct spotted fur which is undoubtedly appealing to the human eye and is also crucial to their survival. The dusted gold skin between brown shaded patches gives the Giraffe a distinguishable pattern of naturally beautiful symmetry that helps them stay somewhat camouflaged against the African plains.

Two completely white giraffes were spotted in Kenya in 2017. The unusual mother-daughter duo have a genetic condition called leucism, which inhibits pigmentation in the skin cells. Only three of these incredibly rare white-skinned Giraffes sightings have ever been reported.

Zuzu started out just like any other giraffe but then sprouted wings when she was almost 2 years old probably due to a desire to fly. No other winged giraffe sightings have ever been reported.

Sadly, Giraffe numbers are declining fast due to poaching and habitat loss, with the Giraffe population in Africa dropping by 40%. In what’s being called a “silent extinction,” Giraffe population numbers dropped from 155,000 in 1985 to 97,000 in 2015. They were recently added to IUCN’s Endangered Species list, several subspecies currently listed as critically endangered.

World Giraffe Day is June 21st every year
This date was chosen to celebrate these gentle giants because it’s the longest day of the year.

This handsome fella is a male mandarin duck I just finished for the 3rd Annual IIDA NE Block Party put forth by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Sponsorship committees!

This awesome event supports local minority, LGBTQIA+, and women-owned businesses with a focus on highlighting products designed by underrepresented groups in the design industry. I’m excited to once again be asked to create something for one of the raffle prizes.

Did you know:

- These gorgeous creatures can be found in Korea, Eastern Russia, China, Taiwan, and Japan.

- The Mandarin duck is used as a symbol for Chinese weddings because they are monogamous and stand for wedded happiness and fidelity.

- Despite the closeness of the relationship with the wood duck, no hybrids have ever been recorded. This is because the mandarin has a chromosome aberrance that makes it impossible for it to produce hybrids with other ducks.

- Mandarin ducks are highly social, flying in large flocks during winter.

- Their pair bonds are very strong and they will return to the same mate if they survive.

- This species is not hunted for food because they, to my surprise, don’t taste like Skittles and instead are known to “taste bad”, which has consequently helped them survive.

Aaaaand it’s finally complete!

This might be one of my most labor intensive projects but it was a workout for my brain and I am pleased with the results! The tassel in the middle wasn’t originally part of the plan but I had to add it to offset the weight of the pomegranates which was causing it to not hang straight. It’s now ready to head to its forever home in Portland, Oregon!
